Peaches and Cream Honeysuckle

The trellis in front of our little backyard guest house used to sport a different vine. I wish I could remember its name. I do remember it couldn't take the heat and died before a whole season passed. As did the climbing hydrangea, which was going to look so STUNNING! (Drat.) The 'New Dawn' climbing roses hated the spot as well. After three failures, I had little faith in the tiny twig of a vine that I plopped there next. A Dutch cultivar, Lonicera periclymenum (honeysuckle) 'Peaches and Cream' was too good to be true, at least on paper. It was reported to be fragrant, compact, and promised to bloom from spring through summer. It was going to attract hummingbirds and butterflies and it was disease and pest resistance. And it could take the heat, humidity, and drought of our western Kentucky summers. Really? Yep. All proved true. It thrives. It has loyally filled its spot for the past three seasons, and butterflies and hummers really do flock to it.

It bloomed in time for a local spring flower show and took a first place! And it had it's portrait taken as a practice shot of how well an iPhone could manage an up close photo on a lightbox for a camera club outing. And then that photo went on to win a 2nd place at the 2026 New England Fall Flower show last month.

And look at this lucky find from a local antique shop. Could there have been a more perfect name for the guest house? I think not.
